The Convention, signed before Austria enters the European Union, aims at increasing cooperation to improve the quality of the waters and to prevent pollution in the Danube Basin. In particular, measures of common action for the protection of the aquatic environment including the groundwater are included, as well as for the regulation of the river flow. Furthermore, the Convention provides for the creation of hydroelectric systems and the coordination of emergency systems.
