1st ΕΧCOP (First Extraordinary Meeting of the Conference of the Parties), 22 – 23 February 1999 & 24 – 28 January 2000, Cartagena (Colombia): Cartagena Protocol: The Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety concerns the movements of living modified organisms from one country to another, as a result of modern biotechnology. The goal is to protect biological diversity from potential risks that can be created by these organizations.

10th COP, 18 – 29 October 2010, Nagoya (Japan): Nagoya Protocol: The Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization to the Convention on Biological Diversity provides a transparent legal framework for the effective application of one of the three objectives of the Convention on Biological diversity: the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources.
